~Local is The New Luxury~

Place & Date : Plaga Bali , 5-11 August 2019

Ask local people to know new luxury (values)
Have foreign visitors take movie shooting in Bali Indonesia and experience life

Q: The countryside experiences a luxurious life? Watching a movie and..?

A: This year's theme is "LOCAL IS THE NEW LUXURY". In Indonesia, luxury means going to a 5-stars hotel and eat western food. I want to change that. To me, sleeping under the stars, getting in touch with real nature and people are the new meaning of luxury. Thus, they will experience what is real in that place, and locals go on life like usual. What will be different is, there will be a culture exchange and understanding of what is important for locals to learn from foreigners, and what foreigners can learn from locals. I want the film students to capture what is important but overlooked by the locals. These movies later can be used for NGOs/corporates to advance discussions and make an action.

We have currently started the Film Roadshow every Monday at SMKN 1 Petang with Future Farmers Indonesia, and on progress with Sedasa Farm to Table and Ubud Food Festival.

We hope to expand and collaborate with Japan, as well as inviting 5 Japanese film students to attend the film camp. Our story and purpose are summarised in attached proposal.

Q & A

1.
Q: Fill the gap between the city and the countryside?

A: Yes, Indonesia has a big social gap and inequality, resulting in difficulties for communication. Our communities range from people who don't go to school, to people who are highly exposed to international world. We cannot use the same strategy, and need visual such as film to make more understanding between the city and countryside. (Also, Indonesians prefer to experience directly than just reading, which becomes the reason why CINEMAWITHOUTWALL needs to bring students to Bali and screening movies outdoor in order to fulfil that gap.)

2.
Q: Cities seek natural living? Clean water and air, fresh vegetables, bird’s voice, summer camp for overseas young filmmakers to make movies in Indonesia and..?

A: ..and observing the local life directly, not just by books. This Film Festival is a chance for film students to study about their "future audiences" especially in Indonesia, and to uncover the important issues that is often unexposed. There has not been any study about film market in Indonesia by Indonesians. The Film Roadshow is also a chance for me to gather that data and help preparing filmmakers to create better quality stories.

4.
Q: Are you looking for contributors such as film production cost at this event?

A: Yes. The concept is like adoption. Choose a team and story (consisting of 5 students & 1 mentor) for IDR 30,000,000 to make a 10 mins movie in a week. But if contributors want to support with equipments, venue, or the whole event directly, it is also welcomed.

5.

Q: What is the content of the movie to be shown at the event?

A: The movies are expected to capture the local life in Plaga, such as issue about land for sale, water crisis, farming in Balinese Hinduism, local herbs/plants, children's dream, etc. There will be a brief by CINEMAWITHOUTWALL and supervision 2 months before festival at respective universities, based on my research with Future Farmers Indonesia.

6.

Q: Even after the event, regularly hold movie screenings locally? What is the content of the movie to show?

A: Yes, I will collaborate with film communities & festivals that are already exist, and create new ones with new partners. The contents will be adjusted to theme and market of the place. For example, as we are going to collaborate with Ubud Food Festival "Local Herbs", we inform university partners to gather movies about local food and create new movies to suit better international audiences.

We Support & Collaboration ECO-Local activities

We will send eco-local projects working in Bali Indonesia to the world, seek sponsorship, support activities.
We are planning to collaborate on events as well
